Whatcom Site Council Minutes for March 8, 2004

Present:
Jeff Coulter, Sara Strommer, Tad Lewis, Chris Elliot, and Wendy Albrecht

Old Business:

· Volunteer Opportunities: Wendy attended the February 23rd PTSA meeting to report the goals and progress of the Site Council to PTSA. PTSA already had a volunteer coordinator in place, but were very receptive to any ideas in recruiting volunteers. Jeff reported volunteer hours; they are remaining fairly constant at 50-60 hours per week.

· “F” and Halleck Street Crossing: Jeff contacted Manuel Babayan to discuss options. City Police have been patrolling with radar guns to encourage people to slow down. We are waiting further response from Mr. Babayan.

· 8th Grade Failure Rates at Whatcom: Jeff presented a graph of 8th grade “F’s” received for the past 3 years at Whatcom. The data will hopefully show a trend of less “F’s” as a result of BEST time. During BEST time 5-8 students are pulled out to work in smaller groups in areas they are having difficulty. The staff seems to be supportive of BEST and feels it will have a positive impact.

From the Floor:

· Math Club: A team at Whatcom placed 2nd in the County Math Olympiad, with one student placing 3rd and one 8th over all.

· Early Release: Chris asked what could be done to discourage students from leaving before 12:00 on early release days. Chris had observed some students leaving before scheduled dismissal and was concerned for their safety. Jeff was going to look into options.

Next meeting will be April 19th, 2004 at 6:30 in the Library.
